When Seville’s Children Painted History on Calle Torneo

On 4 December 1980, Seville’s Calle Torneo became a giant canvas as 400 schoolchildren let their imaginations run free in a mural competition organised by the city council’s culture department and sponsored by Monte de Piedad, celebrating Andalusia. 🌟

The street was closed to traffic so children and passers-by could enjoy the day. The young artists, selected after submitting sketches, received a savings book containing 1,000 pesetas as their prize! 💰

🖌 One mural sparked controversy. Hermanos Machado School created a piece with the message “Andalusians, demand land! Out with the big fish!”—a reference to powerful figures. UCD representatives on the city council strongly criticised it, even calling for its removal. The mural and its message triggered heated debate in Seville’s ABC newspaper. 🗞

📸 In the images, the children stand proudly beside their work, recalling a time when even the youngest raised their voices about Andalusia’s future. Do you remember this moment? What do you think of the mural and the controversy? Tell us in the comments! 👇
