Michelangelo’s David in Seville?

Curiosity got the better of you, didn’t it? We’re getting to know each other! Yes, Michelangelo’s David in Seville. At the age of 26, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti began working his magic on the figure of David. The world-famous original, more than five metres tall, stands in Florence, Italy.

How does that connect with Seville? The answer lies in the Casa de Pilatos. Visit the palace and you will find a smaller version of David in one of its courtyards. Fadrique Enríquez de Ribera, one of the palace’s owners, travelled to Jerusalem via Italy, where he developed a love of Italian Renaissance art.

He brought back works acquired in Italy, as did his nephew Per Afán de Ribera. The growing collection led to substantial alterations to the house, overseen by Benvenuto Tortello, an architect from Naples. I recommend visiting Florence at least once to see the original. Meanwhile, you can explore Casa de Pilatos and enjoy its smaller David.
